OF NOTE MAY 2026
A REAL MOTHER OF AN ISSUE
Romulus Won
And so May rolls around again…starting with May Day and rolling on to Mother's Day. May 1st, May Day, the traditional European Pagan spring festival, Beltane, is the internationally recognized day to celebrate Laborers. It’s interesting how the ultimate manifestation of feminine iconography, labor — giving birth, is construed into a recognition of anyone who does manual work. Then a couple weeks later Hallmark says we should celebrate mothers…only this holiday is not a joyous celebration for those with strained relationships with their mothers or mothers who have lost children, or women who for whatever reason have not given birth or otherwise entered into motherhood. And in these times in the United States motherhood and women’s issues have never been more strained.
Romulus and Remus were twins born of the Vestal Virgin, Rhea Silvia after being raped by Mars. As a punishment for “her” breaking her vow of chastity she was buried alive. Some things never seem to change…a woman was punished by death for the sinful crimes of a man. And THEN Romulus kills Remus to become the sole founder of Rome. How appropriate that Vatican City is less than an hours walk from Rome. Let’s explore it in detail in this Mother of an Issue of 1UV MONTHLY Magazine.
