You’ve Heard What They Say About Opinions, Right?

I made a 1UV a kind T-shirt that had an image of a cat’s behind with the words: Opinions Be Like… After our elderly kitty pulled through a very dicey surgery I gratefully gifted the T to our vet. If you’ve ever had a kitty in your life you know how funny and accurate that T-shirt was. But these days, having an opinion isn’t always popular…particularly if it doesn’t match either of the polar ends of the political spectrum. With the encroaching of AI technologies in writing, union scandals and disputes, sale of local publications to large media outlets, and governmental punishment of those who question the Oval Office, having an opinion can be down right dangerous. And it seems fewer and fewer people even know how to form their own opinions these days! With attention spans shortened as a result of the saturation of platforms like TikTok and Instagram, there has been a dip in literacy rates across all demographics and levels of developed, developing, and “third world” countries. When people can’t read they can’t write. If they can’t read and write they can’t learn. When people can’t learn they can’t engage in critical thought. And when they can’t engage in critical thought, they can’t develop an opinion of their own. They can only be told what to think. You can see how this could be dangerous. This is why I continue to write, edit and publish 1UV MONTHLY…to stand against such informational tyranny, offering a life jacket to those still exercising their brains. I don’t demand you agree with me. In fact, I welcome your dissent and offer to publish it if you submit a “Letter to the Editor” at 1uvmonthlymagazine.net/contact . But having an opinion has become dangerous. Either side might come after you if you don’t believe the “correct” thing. 1UV MONTHLY has been harassed a number of times over articles published. I’ve been threatened and harassed by both left wingers and anti-choice right wingers. An anti-choice woman from Texas came into 1UV once and told me she wished my mother had felt the same way about abortion as me…meaning she wished I were dead or not born. Such is the irony of anti-choice people who claim to be “pro-life” while having no problem perpetrating/threatening violence and/or supporting the death penalty. In this issue I share some opinions. In this issue you will find book, music, and taqueria reviews, an announcement about the inaugural exhibition at 1UV’s new Carmel location, another installment of Card of the Month focusing on why opinions have value, an article about why critics matters, one about my curating methods and philosophy and two more comics from Diorama Madness about the nature of Dogs and God, AND how greed and power can corrupt even the most enlightened. In Brave Enough Lettie and her young security guard, Dennis, share some personal info with each other and Dennis dares to give Lettie his honest opinion of Lettie’s overly attentive companion, Phil. Some interesting synchronicities occur that might be clues to the origin of the creepy letters Lettie received sparking her trip to Philly and need for a security guard AND Lettie decides that saying nothing at all is better than writing a bad review of an uncouth client who faithfully carries her magazine.
